‘Botanical Portraits’

‘Flowers are delicate and short lived, just like their past representations. Now, due to the changingsocial values and pervasiveness of flora in modern society, the symbolism offlowers has, to a large extent, been lost. Like portraits, flower identity canelicit different interpretations and perceptions, depending on the viewer. Here, the two genders have been photographed in the absence of sociallyconstructed gender roles; they simply signify love, as do the roses. Thesethree pieces draw together the concept of identity and symbolism in bothportraits and flora, as well as contrasting current and past ways of viewing apiece of art. Linking botanical symbolism with portraiture, createsdelicate analogies between the ways in which we view and think about images.’
